The Latin words "signum fidei" mean "sign of faith" in English. For Lasallians, the star is our sign of faith. The star is the star of Bethlehem, which guided the magi to Jesus, the Messiah. Saint John Baptist de La Salle, in his meditation on the Feast of the Epiphany, wrote that the magi are examples to us of faith through their willingness to leave home for an unknown, distant land to meet the Messiah, their willingness to ask Herod, the king, where the "King of the Jews" had been born, and to recognize Jesus, even though sleeping in a stable in swaddling clothes, as King and God. "What holy audacity" these men had, says De La Salle, in living out their faith. Let us, like the magi, live in "holy audacity", never failing to live out our faith and always recognizing the face of God in those whom the world disregards and scorns.
